Whale Watching off the Coast of Long Beach

Presented by The Aquarium of The Pacific with Harbor Breeze Cruises

By Mari-Anne De Castro July 4, 2019

This week my family was invited by the Aquarium of The Pacific to join them on board one of Harbor Breeze Cruises Whale Watching boats.

We have always been a fan of The Aquarium of The Pacific and have always enjoyed seeing the different exhibit at the Aquarium and learning about Fishy Friends in the water.

This time staff from the Aquarium invited us on a morning cruise to try and spot one of the Blue Whales that are visiting the California Coast who come near our shores to feed.

It was a cloudy morning and even though the waters where a bit choppy we we're able to cut through bumpy waves  and find blue whales that were being studied by scientist so that they are able to pass on educational information about how these massive animals live in the water.

The Port of Los Angeles is one of the busiest ports in the world. There are also more than 2,000 whales that are swimming on the California Coast and some of them find themselves in the busy water coastal ways of Long Beach and San Pedro. Many times due to their closeness to the ships they sometimes get hurt by the large vessels that are passing through the waters. It is The Aquarium of The Pacific, Harbor Breeze Cruises and Whales Scientist goals to educate everyone how we can help these endangered animals from becoming extinct.

During our trip we we're lucky to find a pod of Dolphins that we're crossing the channel, birds diving into the water and feeding themselves and of course spotting Kinko the Blue Whale that is pictured above.

According to The Aquarium of the Pacific Staff the whales names are chosen by those who have discovered them. This time our whale was "Kinko". The duration of the trip we were able to see her surface at least 3 times with an interval of 15 min between when she would surface back up to get some air.

The Aquarium of The Pacific does a daily departure for their Whale Watching Excursion at 12 pm and 3pm.

The cost is $54.95 per adult with Admission to the Aquarium included.:

 $40.95 child (3-11), and $50.95 senior (62+).
Members: $25 adult, $15 child (3-11), $20 for senior (62+).

I highly recommend taking the earlier cruise if possible especially if you have yet not gotten your sea legs. Also make sure to bring a sweater because it does get windy once you are out in the open. Harbor Breeze Cruise do give you the option to enjoy the cruise inside the boat and restrooms are also available on board during the duration of the cruises.
